Sample Collection Manager and Contact Person

Every sample collection in Uppsala Biobank should have a sample collection manager. The sample collection manager has rights, duties, and delegated responsibility for the biobank samples in their collection. For research sample collections, a mission description is signed between the sample collection manager and the biobank manager.

The distribution of responsibilities differs depending on whether it is a sample collection intended for research or a sample collection intended for healthcare, diagnostics, and treatment (HDT). Each research sample collection in Uppsala Biobank has a sample collection manager. An agreement, "Mission Description for Sample Collection Manager for Research Sample Collection in Uppsala Biobank," is established between the sample collection manager and the biobank manager. The agreement includes, among other things, that the sample collection manager has controlling rights over the samples. Control rights mean that the sample collection manager has the right to use the samples for their own ethically approved research in accordance with applicable laws and regulations for research on human samples. It also means that the extraction of samples for a new sample collection within the same management or the release of samples to another management can only occur if both the sample collection manager and the biobank manager approve.

The responsibility for sample collections intended for HDT at Akademiska sjukhuset has been clarified through a hospital director's decision. For HDT sample collections, the heads of operations at Akademiska sjukhuset are the sample collection managers. In relevant cases, the responsibility is further delegated to section heads.

Contact Person

Each research sample collection should have a contact person appointed by the sample collection manager. The contact person and sample collection manager can be the same person, and there can be more than one contact person associated with a research sample collection. The contact person should be someone easily reachable via email or phone, actively involved in the sample collection, and managing the associated information.
