Our Mission

Uppsala Biobank has been assigned the following tasks by its principals.

General Tasks:

Administer Uppsala Biobank with registration number 827 under the supervisory authority of the Inspection for Health and Care (IVO).
Establish and maintain a stable organization and structure for biobank specimens and collections.
Provide expertise and tools to comply with current laws and regulations governing biobank operations.
Perform services and provide support for specimen management.

Establish new specimen collections in Uppsala Biobank by creating biobank agreements according to national templates.
Establish agreements with specimen collection managers for new and existing collections within Uppsala Biobank, regulating access to specimens and clarifying the division of responsibilities between the biobank manager and the collection manager.
Decide on the withdrawal and transfer of specimens or specimen collections. However, no withdrawal or transfer from existing specimen collections can occur without the approval of the collection manager.
Establish agreements with the biobank manager at the receiving biobank using national templates when transferring specimens or specimen collections.
Maintain a register of collection managers and contact persons, as well as responsible researchers if applicable.
Manage collections with significant research value, lacking a collection manager. Conclude collections that have no collection manager and lack future research value. Decide whether a collection should be concluded or managed when there is no collection manager or when the collection manager wishes to relinquish collection responsibilities.
Document major deviations in specimen collections according to reports from collection contacts or collection managers.
Report to the supervisory authority IVO when major deviations occur in a specimen collection or when a collection has been concluded.
Report biobank specimens to the Swedish Biobank Register.
