About Uppsala Biobank

Uppsala Biobank is a research infrastructure and a center of expertise for biobanking issues at Uppsala University and Region Uppsala.

Uppsala Biobank, with registration number 827 with the supervisory authority, the Inspection for Health and Care (IVO), is the only common biobank for Region Uppsala and Uppsala University. Researchers at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) are also required to register their sample collections with human material in Uppsala Biobank.

History

Uppsala Biobank started its operations in 2008 and was established because the former County Council of Uppsala County and Uppsala University saw many benefits in having a shared infrastructure and a center of expertise for biobanking issues.

This approach provides better conditions for meeting current laws and regulations by ensuring traceability and security, clarifying rights and obligations concerning biobank samples, and preventing conflicts between the principal and researchers. Other goals included streamlining administration, promoting collaborations, creating a healthcare-integrated biobank, and strengthening quality work.

Organization

Uppsala Biobank is a center formation with two principals: Region Uppsala represented by Akademiska Hospital and Uppsala University represented by the Faculty of Medicine within the Medical and Pharmaceutical Science Area. Uppsala Biolab (formerly UCR Laboratory) is also part of the Uppsala Biobank center formation.

Uppsala University and Region Uppsala have decided that all biobank samples under these two principals should be included in a sample collection at Uppsala Biobank. The head of Uppsala Biobank is the region's biobank coordinator and is responsible for all biobank samples and collections within the principals' operations, both research sample collections and collections intended for care, diagnostics, and treatment (VDB). All sample collections at Uppsala Biobank must have a sample collection manager. The division of responsibilities between the sample collection manager and the biobank manager has been clarified in an agreement. Read more about sample collection responsibility [here](link to relevant information).
